AEO describes work intended to help business information be discovered and understood in search-engine or AI answers. It shares foundations with SEO: accessible pages, clear explanations, and information readers can verify.
How are SEO, AEO, and GEO different?
These terms overlap. Use them to discuss the purpose of work, rather than three packages every business must buy. A clear service page can help both a visitor from Google and someone following a link from an AI answer.
| Term | Discussion focus | Example business question |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Discovery through search | Can people find my service page? |
| AEO | Information that helps answer a question | Does my explanation address the customer’s need? |
| GEO | Visibility in generative search | Is my business or source mentioned in the answers we observe? |
Do AI answers need special optimization?
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements or special schema. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

What could this look like for a business?
Imagine a local bag shop facing this question: “A work bag that fits a 14-inch laptop for under $100?” Its product page has a name, photo, and buy button. The reader still cannot check laptop-compartment dimensions, materials, current price, or shipping terms.
A practical response is to fill those gaps using real product information: dimensions, checked capacity, price, stock, and a way to contact the shop. This is an illustrative scenario, not a search experiment or a promise that an AI system will recommend the shop.
- Answer the buyer’s need before adding keyword variations.
- Use information the business actually has; do not invent specifications or reviews.
- Link product pages to relevant size guides and policies.
Which information deserves attention?
Start with what helps a prospective customer decide: what you offer, who it suits, the limits of the service, and what evidence exists. Explain who wrote the content and where the information comes from. An updated date is useful when someone actually checks the content again.
- Service descriptions and processes that match real operations.
- Publishable examples with their limitations.
- Prices or quoting criteria that have been decided.
- Consistent contact details, business names, and operating information.

What about ChatGPT Search?
OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot for search from GPTBot for model training. Review their access requirements separately. Your robots.txt choices also need to agree with your website’s CDN or firewall access.

Start with work you can inspect
Choose one important page and one customer question. Record the missing information, improve it using facts, and note the change date. Observe page discovery, relevant visits, and inquiries; keep AI-answer observations as a separate sample.
Ask a provider what they will do, what access they need, and how findings will be reported. A mention in one AI answer is not enough to demonstrate increased business demand.
Put it into practice.
Use the self-assessment to turn these ideas into a short list of things to check. It does not scan your site or predict rankings.
